Nine months after it was last produced, the awards machine that is the World’s 50 Best – a highly controversial ranking of the best restaurants around the world – is back, and two New York restaurants have made it to the top.
The acclaimed Korean spot Atomix won the top spot for an American restaurant at No. 33, up from No. 44 in 2021. (They also won the organization’s Art of Hospitality award.) The Seafood Palace in Eric Ripert’s white tablecloth, Le Bernardin – who was ranked at No. 44 last year – has remained stable in the rankings this year at the same place on the list. Mexican dining destination Cosme, the highest-ranked New York restaurant on the list last year at No. 21, has moved to No. 69.
The ceremony – which was moved from Moscow to London in February – has operated under a new set of rules since 2019. The headliner change was that former No. 1 restaurants were disqualified for the top spot the following year . Then he quickly awarded the top spot of 2021 to the previous four-time winner Noma, as the restaurant moved to Copenhagen and changed its menu. Nearby Copenhagen restaurant Geranium took the top spot this year.
The World’s Best 50 organization has been repeatedly criticized for its picks each year, which largely favors Eurocentric tasting menus run by male chefs. This year, no restaurant located in India or the Middle East made the list, while only one restaurant from the African continent – the Cape Fyn restaurant – was listed at No. 37. The organization also removed all restaurants eligibility for awards based on country. invasion of Ukraine.
