An unlikely survivor emerged from the charred building of the Gaisano Grand Mall of Antique in San Jose de Buenavista on Friday, June 18.

It was Jollibee, the anthropomorphic mascot bee of the famous Jollibee fast food chain.

A photo of Jollibee posted to Jo Olivz’s Facebook account showed the mascot standing among the smoldering debris.

Olivz captioned the photo, “Jollibee lang sakalam” (Jollibee is strong), an apparent reference to why the mascot survived.

At the time of publication, Olivz’s post has garnered 2,000 shares, 1,300 emoticon reactions, and nearly 100 comments, most of which expressed fear of Jollibee’s ability to survive the blaze.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has yet to declare the blaze after more than 12 hours of trying to put out the blaze which started at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17.

Ancient Provincial Marshal Randy Pudadera, in a virtual interview Friday afternoon, said there were still embers and heat continued to engulf the two-story mall.

“The fire is already under control but we are not yet declaring a fire,” he said at the time of publication. (With a PNA report)
