Leeds man with fast food restaurant that attracts TikTokers

If you’re torn between making a date at a fancy restaurant or somewhere cheap and cheerful, then a Leeds venue may be the answer to your dilemma.

Restaurant owner Arfan Hussain, 31, has come up with his brand new restaurant concept to save his business during the pandemic.

He now serves fine fast food at My Spice and Grill in Kirkstall Road, which he dubbed “modern fast food,” after struggling to attract customers to his old Standard Indian restaurant.

Arfan has been in the food industry since the age of 16, his My Spice and Grill restaurant has grown in popularity since its renovation in February, attracting students and TikTokers.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Bradford, said: “To be honest I just didn’t want to give up.

“I tried everything I could last year but one day I wanted to give up, it didn’t work. Then, as I drove out of the restaurant in Bradford on my own, I was just thinking, “No, it’s not in my nature – I shouldn’t give up!”

Arfan was determined not to give up when his business was in trouble

“I have known this profession for so many years. Why not try something different? I know it, so let’s give it a try. “

He closed the restaurant in October 2020, which it first opened in December 2019, and created a whole new menu to match the concept.

Customers can choose from a range of ‘high quality’ fast food items like kebabs, burgers, vegan offerings, and even Turkish baklava for dessert.

He installed a new open kitchen to accompany his new menu, where the chefs can be seen shaving the meat on the rotisserie wheel and baking the special Arfan bread used for the wraps.

Since the reopening of My Spice and Grill, he has run it like the other restaurants he has managed although the food is less sophisticated, with table service.

He said: “All my life I have worked in fine dining restaurants, so we love to provide a fine dining experience. I like to chat with clients and tell them what we do and what we do best. We can advise people on what to have.

“University students and even people from outside Leeds came. I had TikTokers who came to make TikTok videos.
